How Aethel uses AI
Last updated: October 2026
Aethel uses AI to run interviews and to write a first assessment of each one. This page explains exactly what the AI does, what it does not do, and where people make the decisions.
The interviewer is an AI
Your interviewer is an AI, not a person. It appears as a realistic video avatar and speaks its questions out loud. The questions are written by an AI model (from OpenAI) based on your field, your profile, and your earlier answers. The avatar is provided by our video interview provider, currently Beyond Presence. It says it is an AI at the start, and again whenever you ask. If its video cannot start or stops, the interview goes on by voice and text. The backup interview, used only when the live interview room cannot start, has no video: the questions are shown on screen.
What the AI scores
After the interview, an AI model reads the written transcript and scores a few areas, such as problem solving, depth in your field, how you explain your work, and how you work with others. It also writes a short summary.
- Every score must quote your own words from the transcript. You can see those quotes next to each score.
- If your answers do not show evidence for an area, it is marked "not enough evidence" instead of getting a low score.
- The AI is told not to guess your level, predict fit, or recommend hiring.
- Your overall result is calculated only from the areas that have evidence.
What the AI never looks at
- Your face, your video, or your voice. We do not record video or audio, and nothing analyzes your expressions, tone, or accent.
- Your screen, mouse movements, or keystrokes.
- Your photo, age, gender, race, or other personal characteristics. We do not give them to the AI.
If you speak your answers, your speech is turned into text first: in the live interview room by our speech-to-text provider (Deepgram, through LiveKit), otherwise by your browser. The AI only ever sees the text, and we do not save audio recordings. Speech recognition can make mistakes; if it got something wrong, tell us.
People make the decisions
AI scores support a hiring team's review. They do not make hiring decisions, and Aethel does not reject anyone automatically. The company's team reads the transcript and the evidence and makes its own decision.
You see your results first. A company sees them only when you took the interview through that company's link, or chose to share a recent interview there. Anyone else sees them only if you send a share link or a PDF verification code, or turn on your Find experts profile. See who sees your results.
Ask for a review of your result
If you think your result is wrong, open your results and choose "Ask for a review", or email support@aethel.pro with "Review request" in the subject. Aethel's AI support assistant reads your transcript and your scores, checks each score against the scoring rules, and replies within 2 business days. If the problem was on Aethel's side, the assistant can offer you a free retake. A review cannot change a decision a company already made.
Before an interview in our live interview room, you can choose more time per answer, more time overall, type only, or larger captions on the consent screen, without asking anyone. If you need anything else, or would prefer not to be assessed by AI, write to us before you start. We reply within 2 business days. Replies come from Aethel's AI support assistant. If a company sent you the interview link, you can also ask that company directly.
Notice, consent, and AI hiring laws
Some places have laws about AI in hiring, such as New York City (Local Law 144), Illinois (the Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act and the Illinois Human Rights Act), Colorado, California, and the European Union (the AI Act and the GDPR). Here is how Aethel works today:
- Notice: before a saved interview, the consent screen tells you the interviewer is an AI, what the AI scores, what it never scores, and who decides. This page and how the AI interview and scoring work explain it in full.
- Consent: you agree before a saved interview starts, and we keep a dated record of your consent and of the explanation you were shown. You can stop at any time.
- Video and voice: we do not record interview video or audio, and no AI judges your face, voice, or video. Aethel never uses face recognition, face analysis, or voice identification. If you speak in the live interview room, your audio is used only to write down what you say and to tell when you have finished speaking.
- Another way to be assessed: you can ask for an accommodation or another way to be assessed before you start, by sending us a message. If a company sent you the link, that company decides, and you can ask them too.
- Sharing: your results go only to you, to a company if you used its link, and to anyone you choose to share them with.
- Deletion: you can delete your interview at any time from your profile page, and it happens right away. If you ask by email, we delete it within 30 days.
- People decide: Aethel does not make hiring decisions, and never rejects or advances anyone on its own. Companies decide, by hand. You can ask for a review of how your interview was scored. Review requests are answered by Aethel's AI support assistant.
- Audits: Aethel has not had an independent bias audit, and we do not claim any certification.
Companies that use Aethel are responsible for the notices, audits, and other steps the laws where they hire require. We give them a plain summary of those laws and notice text they can send you, on For companies. Law by law, see how Aethel supports AI hiring laws. If a law that applies to you gives you a right we have not covered here, email support@aethel.pro and tell us where you are.
Known limits
- AI can misread an answer or miss context. That is why every score shows its quotes, and why a person makes the decision.
- A 15-minute interview covers only part of what you can do. Results describe what you said in that interview, nothing more.
