Accessibility
Last updated: October 2026
Aethel should work for everyone who takes or reviews an interview, including people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or reduced motion. This page says where we are today, what does not work well yet, and how to ask for an accommodation.
Our goal
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Today Aethel partially meets it: our information pages meet it in our testing, and some other parts, listed below, do not yet.
Accommodations for your interview
Before the interview starts, the consent screen lets you choose any of these. You do not need to give a reason.
- More time per answer
- When you pause, the interviewer waits twice as long before it replies: up to 10 seconds instead of 5 in the middle of a sentence. It checks in after 60 seconds of silence instead of 20. Pressing Done answering, or sending a typed answer, still ends your answer at once.
- More time overall
- The interviewer starts wrapping up at about 16 minutes instead of 13, so you have more time for the same questions. The interview still ends by 20 minutes, the longest our video interviewer can run today.
- Type only, no microphone
- You type every answer. The page never turns on your microphone, and the interviewer does not listen for sound. You still hear the interviewer and see every question as text.
- Larger captions
- Shows the interviewer's words in bigger text under the video. You can also turn this on or off during the interview.
Your choice is saved with your interview record. Companies do not see it, it is not part of your results or scores, and the interviewer never mentions it. Your answers are scored the same way, and the scoring never sees your choice.
Ask for a different accommodation
If you need something else, such as breaks, a different format, or help with something that blocks you, send us a message with the topic “An accommodation for the interview”, or email support@aethel.pro with “Accommodation” in the subject. Ideally ask before you start. You do not need to share a diagnosis.
- A person at Aethel replies within 2 business days.
- If a company sent you the interview link, you can also ask that company. They decide how their own hiring process works.
- Your request is not part of your interview results, and we do not share it with a company unless you ask us to.
What works today
On the information pages
- Our information pages (home, for experts, for companies, pricing, how interviews work, support, about, and the policy pages) work with a keyboard alone. "Skip to content" is the first thing you reach, and you can always see which item has focus.
- The menu on small screens and the other pop-up panels keep focus inside while they are open, and close with the Esc key.
- Text and buttons on these pages meet the WCAG AA color contrast levels.
- Public pages work at 200% browser zoom and on narrow phone screens without scrolling sideways.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, we turn off animations.
- Images have text alternatives. Form fields have labels, and if something needs fixing, the message appears next to that field and focus moves to it.
In the interview room
- You can type every answer. The microphone and camera are optional, and if you choose "Type only" before you start, the page never turns on your microphone.
- Each question from the interviewer is shown as text under the video while it speaks, and it stays there while you answer. You can make this text larger before or during the interview.
- Screen readers announce each new question once, when the interviewer finishes saying it, and announce changes to the call, such as reconnecting or the interviewer wrapping up.
- You can mute the interviewer's voice, for example to hear your own screen reader instead. The questions stay on screen as text.
- Every control in the interview room works with a keyboard alone, in order, with a visible focus outline. "Skip to your answer" takes you to the answer box, Enter sends your answer, and Escape closes the details panel.
- There is no countdown on your answers. When you pause, the interviewer waits before it replies, up to 5 seconds in the middle of a sentence, or twice as long if you choose more time per answer. Pressing Done answering, or sending a typed answer, ends your answer at once.
- The whole interview ends by 20 minutes. The room shows the limit in its details panel and warns you about 2 minutes before it.
- The interviewer's voice plays only after you choose to start the interview. If your browser holds the sound back, a button lets you turn it on.
- If the video connection drops, your progress is saved and you can keep going by typing.
- You can try a practice interview first. It is text only, needs no account, and nothing is saved.

Known gaps we are working on
- There is no pause button for a break during the interview. If you need breaks, ask for an accommodation before you start.
- "More time overall" moves the wrap-up later, but it cannot make the interview run past 20 minutes yet. That is the longest our video interviewer runs today.
- If the live interview room is unavailable and you take the older interview instead, the accommodation choices above are not offered there, and a screen reader does not announce each new question by itself. The question is on screen as text under the video, and you send each answer when you are ready.
- The interviewer video does not have a separate captions track. The full question is shown as text under the video instead.
- The sign-in page has a few labels with low color contrast.
- Signed-in pages (dashboards, results, and the screens companies use to review candidates) have not yet had the same full review as the information pages and the interview room. Some may have contrast or labeling problems.
- We test with automated tools (axe-core) and with keyboard, zoom, and reduced-motion checks. We have not yet tested with screen readers such as VoiceOver, NVDA, or JAWS.
Report a problem
If something on Aethel is hard or impossible to use, email support@aethel.pro. It helps to include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the device, browser, and any assistive technology you use. A person at Aethel replies within 2 business days.
How we checked
Last reviewed in October 2026. We ran axe-core on every public page at phone and desktop sizes, plus browser tests for keyboard use, visible focus, the phone menu, 200% zoom, and reduced motion. For the interview room, we ran axe-core on every state of the call (connecting, live, reconnecting, wrapping up, stopped, and preparing results) at phone and desktop sizes in a local test copy of the room, and walked through it with a keyboard alone. Questions about this page can go to support@aethel.pro.
